Welcome to Psychotherapy

Develop insight into your state of mind and relationship with others

Introduction to Psychotherapy

Welcome and thank you for visiting my website. I expect there will be any number of reasons as to why you are seeking therapy at this time. I welcome your curiosity as for some people it is not an easy decision to embark on personal therapy.

If you want to develop insight into your state of mind, relationships and interactions with others then psychotherapy can support you with this. It can facilitate a healing process for past hurts, traumas, mistakes, and unwise decisions that might be haunting you or defacing your sense of self-worth and connectedness to others. It can also support you through significant life changes and help you adapt.

It can, over time, help you to understand your needs, values and priorities better, help you communicate more effectively with others and work through complex emotions and feelings that may have held you captive for years in unhelpful patterns or loops of behaviour. Psychotherapy can help you to access your full potential and thrive.

There are different types of counselling/therapy/psychotherapy approaches. I am a qualified and registered psychodynamic psychotherapist with a diverse interest in mental health conditions and difficulties.

I am registered with the British Psychoanalytic Council, a professional association representing the professions of psychoanalytic and psychodynamic psychotherapy. It is made up of a number of member training and accrediting institutions including my own, the British Psychotherapy Foundation.

I work as an independent psychotherapist with a private practice seeing adults and older teenagers on an open-ended basis or for an agreed time period. I offer sessions face to face and also work remotely by video using Zoom, Whats App and Facetime.

I began my career in 1991 first training and practising in Oxfordshire, Buckinghamshire and Northamptonshire. In 1995 I began psychotherapy training and clinical practice alongside my nursing career. I worked in in-patient and mental health community services with adults and with children & young people and their families. During the 1990s I held an honorary psychotherapy training post at the Tindal Centre in Aylesbury, Buckinghamshire. I have been a practising psychotherapist in South-East Cornwall since 2005. I qualified as a psychodynamic psychotherapist in 2011. I am committed to providing talking therapy in a safe, contained, confidential and non-judgemental way.

I offer clinical supervision to healthcare professionals in the public and private sectors.

Psychodynamic Psychotherapy

I am trained to see patients once or twice weekly though patients needs vary and frequency of sessions needs careful consideration.

The psychodynamic approach is based on psychoanalytic theory which makes reference to unconscious processes at work in our internal and interpersonal relationships. These dynamics impact on the quality of our lives and relationship with others. The relationship between patient and psychotherapist is a key

aspect of the therapy work known as the transference relationship.

The more frequent therapy sessions are the more potential there is for a strengthening of the transference relationship and an intensifying of the therapeutic endeavour. This is especially the case in intensive psychotherapy work and explains why psychoanalysts are trained to see patients up to five times a week and psychoanalytic psychotherapists are trained to see patients up to three times a week.

My work is informed by attachment theory and 35 years working/training in the NHS including adult, children, young people & families in generic mental health and eating disorders. I work with patient dreams, imagination and creative forms of expression.

As the therapy relationship develops unconscious patterns of the patient's inner world become reflected in their relationship with their therapist. This process helps patients grow in their awareness of these patterns and their possible function when interacting with others. The dynamics are explored with the therapist, time and again if necessary until satisfactorily worked through and understood. This sometimes involves working through powerful emotions, thoughts and behaviours which may be triggered both inside and outside the therapy space. The aim, through a discerning process, is to build insight, understanding, acceptance, compassion, resilience and self-mastery.

Psychotherapy is not always full of intensity and hard work. There can be moments of lightness, humour, joy and profound synchronicity.

Engaging in such depth work needs to be carefully considered and based on personal need and patience with the process. Psychodynamic psychotherapy can help with this and duration of therapy varies according to individual needs.

If you are interested to know more about the approach yourself please look at the British Psychoanalytic Council and the British Psychotherapy Foundation websites or any other trustworthy sources.
