Develop insight into your state of mind and interactions

Are you considering psychotherapy?

Welcome and thank you for visiting my website.

Are you experiencing mental health difficulties?

Do you find yourself in cycles of unhelpful thinking and behavioural patterns in relationship with others?

Are you experiencing depletion of energy, distress, anger, rage, confusion, numbness, irritation, frustration, depression, hopelessness, desolation, guilt, envy, jealousy, misery, sad, loneliness, isolation, trauma, anxiety, non-specific fear/dread, disconnect from others?

Do you want to develop insight into your state of mind and interactions with others so you can feel better and communicate more effectively? If so then psychotherapy could support you with this process.

There are different types of counselling/therapy/psychotherapy approaches. I am a qualified and registered psychodynamic psychotherapist. I have a diverse interest in mental health difficulties and conditions. I am registered with the British Psychoanalytic Council. This is a professional association, representing the professions of psychoanalytic and psychodynamic psychotherapy. It is made up of a number of member training and accrediting institutions including my own, the British Psychotherapy Foundation.

I work with adults and older teenagers on an open-ended basis or for an agreed time period. I offer sessions face to face and work remotely by video: Zoom, FaceTime, Whereby.com or Whats App.

I have a private psychotherapy practice. My professional background is in mental health nursing, having trained and worked in the NHS since 1991. I continue to work 2 days a week in the NHS in the Cornwall Eating Disorders Service for Children, Young People and their Families.

In the mid 1990s I began psychotherapy training and clinical practice alongside my nursing career working both in in-patient and mental health community services with adults and with children & young people and their families. I began my career in Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire. I have been a practising psychotherapist in South East Cornwall since 2005. I held an honorary psychotherapy training post at the Tindal Centre in Aylesbury, Buckinghamshire during the mid 90s. I am committed to providing psychotherapy/talking therapy in a safe, contained, confidential and non-judgemental way.

I offer clinical supervision to doctors, psychotherapists, therapists, psychologists, nurses and allied healthcare workers in the private and public sector.

Psychodynamic Psychotherapy

As a psychodynamic psychotherapist I am trained to see clients once or twice weekly though clients needs may vary.

The psychodynamic approach is based on the psychoanalytic theory that there are unconscious processes at work in our internal and inter-personal relationships. These dynamics impact on the quality of our lives and relationships with others. The relationship between client and psychotherapist is a key aspect of the therapy work. This is called the transference relationship.

The more frequent therapy sessions are, the more potential there is for a strengthening of the transference relationship and an intensifying of the therapeutic endeavour. This all depends on clients needs. It also relates to why psycho-analysts are trained to see clients up to five times a week and psychoanalytic psychotherapists are trained to see clients up to three times a week.

As the therapy relationship develops, it may be described that unconscious patterns of the client's inner world become reflected in the client's relationship with their therapist. This process helps clients grow in their awareness of these patterns and what their function may be in their interactions with others. The dynamics are explored with the therapist, time and again if necessary until satisfactorily worked through. This sometimes involves working through powerful feelings, thoughts and actions that get triggered both inside and outside the therapy space. The aim through a discerning process is to build insight, understanding, acceptance, compassion, resilience and self-mastery. Engaging in such depth work needs to be carefully considered and based on personal need and patience with the process.

The psychodynamic therapy approach can help with this and duration of therapy varies according to individual needs.
